I highly recommend you read "I Am Boricua". In fact, I think you should own your own copy of this treasure. It felt so personal to me because it encapsulates what it felt like to be small, but full of sensory and pride the day of the Puerto Rican Day Parade. I love reliving those days through Flor's eyes and joyous spirit, Abuela's support and guidance, and the diaspora's unity and excitement. It made my heart swell to see, in such vibrancy, what makes us special! Through every page, "I Am Boricua" permeates infinite love between a child and their grandparent, a child and their cultural identity, and a group of people and the island they're from. As I read and reread the book, I also feel infinite love for the little me I see in Flor.

I Am Boricua is a beautifully written and illustrated love letter to Puerto Rican culture. Samantha J. Garcia-Sherpa captures the pride, resilience, and joy of what it means to be Boricua in a way that is both accessible to children and deeply meaningful to adults. As someone with Puerto Rican roots, I felt an overwhelming sense of recognition and pride reading this book. It honors our history, our spirit, and our future. The language is empowering, the illustrations are vibrant, and the message is one that every young Boricua deserves to hear. Whether you’re Boricua or want to introduce your children to the beauty of Puerto Rican heritage, this book belongs on your shelf.
